GRIFFIN, Ga. --

Griffin authorities said a police sergeant is recovering after another officer accidentally ran over him while responding to a call.

Griffin police sergeants Donald Bailey and Joe Hudson were checking out a call at Taylor Street Middle School Thursday night. Officials said Bailey stepped in front of Hudson’s car and Hudson accidentally ran over him, pinning him beneath the police cruiser.

Fellow officers arrived on the scene and they physically lifted the cruiser off Bailey and rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital.

“Sergeant Hudson is very distraught at this moment. This was a friend, a co-worker, they were on the same shift together. They worked together for several years,” said Cpl. Bryan Clanton with the Griffin County Police Department.

The call at Taylor Street Middle School turned out to be a false alarm.

Bailey is expected to be OK.
