ORLANDO, Fla.
--
A Central Florida woman who was forced to give birth in a car on the side of a busy road early Tuesday was assisted by a fast-thinking police officer and former EMT.
Darren Hinshaw was traveling with his wife, Maria, when she went into labor.
The couple pulled over along state Road 408 at exit 10B near Winnie Palmer Hospital and Darren Hinshaw jumped out of the vehicle to get help.
"We had two options and we saw the (police) lights and the baby was coming," Hinshaw said. "I jumped out and said, '(Does) anybody have experience delivering a baby?' And, they came over and helped."
Officer Steve Adams said when he approached the vehicle, the woman was already giving birth.
"I made contact with the driver's wife and the head of the baby was already coming out," Adams said.
"Luckily, Officer Adams used to be an EMT," Adams said.
Maria Hinshaw gave birth to a healthy girl before being transported to the hospital from the road.
"It is our second child and we couldn't be happier," Hinshaw said.
