POLK COUNTY, Fla. --

A sheriff's sergeant was injured Monday after being dragged by a woman he was trying to apprehend.

Sgt. Bob Barnes of the Polk County Sheriff's Office set up a roadblock at the intersection of U.S. Alternate 27 and Lake Hatchineha Road to stop a vehicle that had been involved in a hit-and-run.

According to the affidavit, Barnes saw a car with front-end damage, approached the vehicle, and ordered the driver to get out of her car. After several demands, Barnes reached into the car to attempt to pull the woman out, but she pressed the gas and drove forward, sheriff's officials said.

Barnes was dragged for several feet before being thrown from the car and hitting his head on a parked patrol car, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle continued driving and hit Barnes' patrol car before coming to a stop after hitting a tree.

Monica Casanova, 24, was pulled from her car from the rear window because of the damage to her car.

Casanova has been charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and possession of cannabis.

Casanova allegedly told deputies she had used cocaine and drunk vodka before driving, officials said. She could also be charged with DUI pending her blood-alcohol level test results.

Barnes suffered a dislocated shoulder, scrapes and bruises, but is expected to recover.

Dumb Move
When will cops learn not to reach into a running vehicle to turn off the ignition or drag the driver from the car. It almost always ends in the cop getting hurt.

Sometimes when the adrenaline is up we are not thinking clearly. You don't know exactly what was going on unless you were there. Just because the cop may have made a dumb move, that is not illegal, does not relieve dirtbag of fault. She should be charge with attempt murder on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony DUI at the minimum. I'm sure there is a plethora of misdemeanor charges we could come up with. She is stupid. Glad to hear the officer is going to be ok.

Response to SD COPPER
Adrenaline rush happens to everyone. In my 30 years I worked with a several cops who couldn't control their adrenaline. I've seen guys after a high risk search warrants literally shaking after everything was secured. Most of them eventually got into trouble because they couldn't control their adrenaline. Good cops look ahead to what could occur and are ready for it. My comment was that you need to control your adrenaline so that you don't do dumb things. Even after the gunfire has started the one who wins is usually the one who remains in control of themselves. As for the woman's punishment, the cop almost killing himself shouldn't have anything to do with her punishment. The cops will throw every felony charge they can think of but we all know that she will walk away with a slap on the wrist.
