this is going to be a mess if departments decide to do this. use code here, not there, why didn't use plain language, don't use plain language for that. oh brother what a headache!

There needs to be ONE universal set of 10-codes for the entire United States....that seems like a better solution....this article really doesnt seem to take into account the many people now days who have police scanners and listen to every word we say....some of that information can be sensitive, and we dont want a bunch of people coming to watch whatever is happening.

Hey, here's an idea.....make a universal 10 code that every agency uses.......WOW that was tough. One word "FED"

Our dept and all depts in our county are already using plain english... it took afew weeks to get use to, it just makes it easier now because some of those unusual calls we rarely get are now in plain english, ex: UFO's. Instead of saying 10-38, we say "Copy a traffic stop".. We started doing after Katrina.

The main reason that agencies couldn't communicate with each other in D.C. on Sept. 11, has less to do with 10 codes and more to do with the fact that some department' s radios are digital while others are analog. Then there's UHF and VHF. What's needed are more common inter-agency radio frequencies.

Didn't they try to do this before and fail?

This is what happens when bureaucrats try to tell us how to do our jobs.

We have enough guys who ramble their stupidity and tell stories on the radio. Taking away 10-codes would be disastrous.

Yet more federal interference on the local level...if you can imagine that.

typical
In a crises, with multiple agencies, okay, I can see the need for plain talk. However, recently, we tried the plain english thing. A dispatcher radioed to one of our officers that the person he had detained was "wanted". Guess what? the suspect bolted when the officer lost the element of surprise. All a bad guy needs to hear is that it's not just a traffic stop or whatever. The problem with the peeple pushing this is they're clueless and have no idea of what police work really consists of. These experts have never given out a parking ticket yet they know what's best for us. And just wait, if we don't comply, we'll probably get sanctioned.

FEMA, the disaster experts,(lol) once threatened to hold federal money if plain talk wasn't used. Its our radio, our calls, our people, our citizens and I don't need Federal Government telling me how to talk on the damn radio.
