WASHINGTON --

Looking for a job? You might want to consider a career with the FBI.

On Monday, the FBI announced a hiring blitz to fill nearly 3,000 job openings. The FBI will hire 850 agents and 2,100 professional staff positions, both at its headquarters and in various field offices, in what it's calling "one of the largest hiring blitzes in our 100-year history."

Officials told CNN it's the largest FBI job posting since immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

All FBI positions require a security clearance and all applicants must undergo a thorough background check. The investigation includes a polygraph examination; drug screening test; credit and records checks; and extensive interviews with former and current colleagues, neighbors, friends, and professors, the FBI said.

The FBI has special needs for agents with critical skills in the following areas: foreign language (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, Somali, Vietnamese, etc.), computer science/information technology, engineering, intelligence, law, law enforcement, military, and physical sciences.

These vacancies are currently open, but will close Jan. 16.

The jobs will be in fields such as:

  • Administrative/Clerical
  • Automotive Mechanic Professionals
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance Professionals
  • Electronic Technicians
  • Engineering Professionals
  • Fingerprint Examiners
  • General Education and Training Professionals
  • Finance/Accounting/Budget Analysis Professionals
  • IT/Computer Science Professionals
  • Intelligence/Analytical Professionals
  • Language Specialists
  • Management and Program Analysis
  • Nursing and Counseling Professionals
  • Physical/Natural/Social Science Professionals
  • Records Management Professionals
  • Security Professionals
  • Physical Surveillance Professionals
  • Human Resources Professionals

"The FBI is like no other career choice you've ever considered," said Assistant Director John Raucci, FBI Human Resources Division. "Whatever your background or expertise, you will find the FBI exceptionally rewarding. It is challenging, compelling, and important, as the work you perform has a daily impact on the nation's security and the quality-of-life for all U.S. citizens."

The FBI's unexpectedly large number of job openings results more from attrition and a wave of retirements than from growing government appropriations, Bureau officials told CNN.

Tom, on behalf of one of the 30,000 people who does work for them, I would be willing to bet the number of application to work with the FBI versus working side-by-side with you would be exponentially astronomical. Sorry you probably don't really understand our role in national security.

Is bank robbery... national security? They are great at paperwork and have absolutely the best public affairs people in the world. Everything they do, when they do it, is on the news the next minute. I think they should focus 100% on terrorism. Not bank robbery, not fugitives, nothing else but trying to protect our country.

In bad economic times, many people join the military, police, or turn to crime.

The FBI should focus on white-collar and corporate crime; however, Wall Street will see that it will never happen. The FBI should also stay focus on organized crime. The 5 New York City crime families are still alive even though it is no longer powerful like it once was.

I agreed that nowadays you have to be perfect even in many LEO agencies. Some agencies will not hired you even though you had a single misdemeanor against you (depending upon its severity) or a minor ticket.

In the movie DAMAGE DONE: The Drug War Odyssey, former police officer Howard Wooldridge stated that due to more stringent hiring standards, many departments are limiting the number of appliciants. Mr. Woldridge stated that when he was a young kid, many of his friends and himself smoke weed (they eventually quit smoking it); however, back in his days, you wasn't disqualified from join the police.

Due to bankruptcy and credit card laws changes with the assistance of Corporate America in the last 8 years, many more people will be disqualified from joining any police force.

Another problem is reference checks. Because of people not knowing their neighbor next door, it will be impossible to get the number of references to put down on your appliciation. Furthermore, you can no longer use the names of your co-workers for reference checks.
