EDEN, N.C. --

A Rockingham County inmate was captured Tuesday after he escaped custody following a medical examination at Morehead Hospital.

Rockingham County Sheriff's Department spokesman Dean Venable said the inmate, Tony Lee Anderson, 41, asked the detention officer if he could use the restroom at about 11:20 a.m.

Venable said the officer agreed and removed Anderson's transport restraints.

That's when, Venable said, Anderson overpowered the officer and ran away from the hospital wearing his green jumpsuit.

Eden Police Chief Reece Pyrtle, who was assisting in the search, saw Anderson at the nearby Meadowgreens Golf and County Club.

Pyrtle, who wasn't in uniform, jumped in a golf cart and drove up to Anderson as he was crossing the 11th green, Venable said.

Since Anderson didn't recognize Pyrtle as a law enforcement officer, he was able to take him into custody without incident just before 11:40 a.m.

Anderson was in custody on charges of unauthorized use of motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, common law robbery, larceny after breaking and entering, misdemeanor larceny, two counts of felony breaking and entering with larceny, felony possession of stolen goods and 18 counts of misdemeanor larceny.

Charges for the escape and assault are pending, Venable said.

Another case of a prisoner in transit overpowering a single officer outside the jail.

Every transport should be cause for higher vigilance.

Take off the cuffs?

No problem. Put on the leg irons.

Two man rule always.

Only one man?

No problem. Trip canceled.

Remember Atlanta.

This inmate was in a hospital setting, but most escape attempts occur in connection with court appearances.

Instead of shuttling these people back and forth, let's make it a national trend to hold trail by teleconference for improved security.

Escort them from their cell to a small room with a webcam, 15 inch flat screen on the wall and a chair.

On the screen, they can tell it to the judge in the big picture.

A smaller picture in picture view of themselves from the webcam appears in the lower right corner.

The savings in time, manpower, gas and security do not take anything away from the accused.

By using retired judges to preside over some of the backlog of cases, using night court and weekends speedy trials could come back in vogue.

The retirees would have something to do, could even do it from home.

Since they are receiving retired pay, they could be pressed back into service. Just one day a month, at the least.

On a lighter note: I would have used a nine iron.
