Wouldn't Dallas need to have enough cruisers for their Officers to drive, for them to speed?

sad
This is silly. What a morale killer for the Dallas PD. If this officer had driven the speed limit and got to the call in normal drive time there could of been a dead person that called or most definately a complaint to the PD that the officer took too long to get there. SO STUPID!!!

So now there saying that you need to respond to a man with a gun call with your lights on...guess they'll be doing less paperwork because everyone will be gone when they get there.

child killed
I'm sadden by the loss of the child but who was at fault for his death?? Easy answer the child himself! Pedestrian in the roadway is a violation of the law in most if not all states, I teach kids and adults alike that that the black pavement or white concrete is made for the travel of vehicles and not pedestrians. Its obvious even with the patrol vehicle exceeding the speed limit that this child did not properly check the roadway for vehicular traffic prior to crossing resulting in his untimely death!

To the other Mike - the suspects will either be gone... or shooting at the approaching patrol unit since the lights and siren let him know they are coming and he can set up an ambush. All policies like this do is make the bosses happy while denying the officer some tactical leeway in arriving at the call.

Yes it was a tragic accident that killed a little boy. But that's exactly what it was - an accident. Cpl. Vaughn didn't deliberately run this kid over, he hit him by accident. A kid on a bike, on a dark street with piss poor lighting. He had no helmet on, dark colored clothes and the officer had just been passed by a car a moment before the kid rode across 4 lanes of a highway. If I blame anyone in this incident I blame the parents for not teaching their son not to ride his bike in that manner.

Should Vaughn have had his lights/siren on? I don't know. I wasn't with him in the car, I don't know how close he was to the call and I won't Monday morning QB another cop if I can avoid it. It may or may not have kept Cole from being killed, I don't know. What I do know is crucifying Vaughn for what was clearly an accident won't bring Cole back and it won't do anything to help the morale at Dallas PD if he is fed to the wolves over this to save Kunkle's administrative face.

With all these restrictions on police you can bet there will be slower police response, more criminals will run from police etc... Civilians should prepare to be on their own for longer period of time before police arrives.

This is a sad accident. You guys are right, the child and parents are to blame. I still feel bad for both of them. But the Officer was responding to an emergency. We all know why we do not use our lights and sirens. First it would cause even move accidents. Why do people not yield? Why STOP right in the inside lane?

Writing a policy that takes away the judgement of the Officers again is a knee jerk reaction. Train, Train and Train. If your Officers are using good judgement hire better officers. Oh that is right, this is Dallas where they have trouble keeping good Officers. If someone has a gun next time and they are assaulting you, the Dallas Officers will eventually get there. It's not like time is important. What is an extra minute or two?

I also should have mentioned how bad I feel for Senior Cpl. Michael Vaughn. It could have happened to any of us. Hang in there!

Speed
Don't worry about it! In Washington. DC the nation's capitol, we drive around with our lights on in position 1 (Blinking) all the time. Every police car belonging to the Metropolitan Police Department "shall" have it's lights flashing while operable, 24 hours a day. We stopped doing police work years (Ramsey) ago in DC. We just go around giving everyone "hug's" now.
