The article above is incorrect in reference to the RCMP policy. Members are allowed 2 half hour workouts on Force time but only if they match the it with 2 half hour workouts on their own time. (There is no direction to come in early or stay late to make up the time. If you do that it's considered voluntary overtime.) Generally, due to staffing levels and call volume, we are not actually able to use the benefit. Also, the RCMP do not have a collective agreement. Members are forbidden from unionizing and our wages and benefits are as directed by the Government of Canada.

One thing this article slightly touches on is the fact that inmates are provided time and equipment to work out and muscle up. Most law enforcement I know strongly disagree with this. Its time to rally our legislators and put an end to this benefit in prisons.

Gym time on duty
This is a no brainer. The criminals are working out daily and when they're on drugs they are almost impossible for one officer to control. Don't allow the officers to work out during their duty hours, then restrict their use of Tasers and you have the result of quickly escalating use of force (to deadly) during an incident. Make it mandatory that all of them work out, and all of them pass a realistic physical agility test annually. This works best for everyone.

This is rediculous. Anything that keeps officers from becoming the portly, out of shape, not wearing their vest cuz it's uncomfortable, badge carriers that so many officers have become is a great thing. Criminals are often better trained and in better shape than officers are and we, as departments, need to use every avenue of incentive to keep the officers ready to defend themselves and others. There are many departments that have their own workout facility and have a physical fitness requirement. My department will reimburse gym membership money if you visit the gym at least 15 times in a month to work out. A half hour is nothing, you could waste that on a single call.

In Texas we would just shoot them and not worry about fighting them.

training/ mixed martial arts
Traditional martial arts teach self defense bu talso stress character development and respect for others. One of the main problems with Mixed Matial arts (Currently and having trained in it) is the instructors generally will train ANYBODY for the money.

Having had experience with numerous tattoed up criminal maggots who train ive began too realize that it should be illegal for a person with a violent criminal record to train in these arts. Although Mixed Martil artist are tough, generally they train in sport only techniques which certainly can be adequate-however they are extremely vunerable to strikes to the groin and it stops them cold (AS it would anyone)

Pay em
Our Dept. allows officers 1 hour and 45 minutes each day to work out. This is alllowed while on the clock. To particiapte, you must get a checkup from your physician saying you are fit enough to do so. This program is sucessful. It encourages physical fitness and raises the publics confidence in its police force. It also reduces stress, heart disease and sick time. We want our officers in peak physical condition as it's necessary to do the job. The criminals have access to weight rooms and make use of it...any department would be foolish not to do the same with their own officers.
