LITHONIA, Ga. --

Tanisha Cross never thought the Taser stun gun she received for Christmas would come in handy so soon.

Cross said she was headed to Wal-Mart in Lithonia with her mother when she noticed a DeKalb County police officer in distress.

"I just told my mom pull over, let's try to help," said Cross.

The 20-year-old mother, who received the taser as a gift from her husband, said she kept it in a diaper bag.

Cross said while others gathered to watch, she sprung into action.

"I went straight for my kid’s diaper bag and I got it and asked it if he [officer] wanted me to do it and he said, 'Yea,'" said Cross.

Cross said the officer had a hard time defending himself because the attacker had taken the officer's radio and managed to rub pepper spray in the officer's face and eyes.

Jolting the attacker, Cross' timing couldn't have been better. Cross said she tasered the suspect in his arms and legs.

Cross said she stunned the attacker to where the officer regained his composure and fought back until a security guard came to their aid.

"He's brave," she said. "He did his best to keep him from his gun. He handled the situation very well. I was just glad I could help him," said Cross.

Cross doesn't consider herself a hero.

"I'm just a bystander trying to help do the right thing," said Cross.

Sometimes we feel that it's us against them.

Then we hear a story like this and we remember what we're fightin' for.

Thanks for helping the officer.

Pablo nailed it... there are plenty of folks out there who want to take us out, but many more, like Cross, who would help at the drop of a hat. Way to go young lady!

It was admirable for this lady to help. Question is...how many of those watching without helping were taking pictures and videos with their cell phones while a brother in blue was in harms way? Kudos to the mother who stepped up when grown men would not.

Tanisha Cross, Thank you so much for helping our brother. We are forever in your debt. If anyone in Atlanta stops this young lady DO NOT WRITE HER she gets a free pass on traffic citations for a lifetime. I am glad she had the courage and calm mind set to help and take action. The other bystanders they could have atleast placed a call to 911 (some might have) or dont be afraid to ask the officer if he/ she needs help.

Thanks agian Tanisha may God Bless you and your family for a life time.

She might not consider herself a hero, but I think she is. The guy had already taken the officers radio and and used peper spray on the officer, taking the officer's gun was proably not far behind. There is no doubt in my mind that she and the security guard saved the officer's life.

HERO
Tanisha Cross, you may not feel like a hero but you are exactly what the definition of the word is, someone who places themselves in harms way to help a stranger. This is one officers funeral that we wont have to attend thanks to your courage! How many others stood by, refusing to help, instead watching as this man fought for his life, a life devoted to protecting them. Ms. Cross if you ever decide to join us I would be proud to have you as a partner, God Bless You!

She did absolutely the right thing. I wonder how much beyond limits of her insurance coverage she'll have to pay for the pain and suffering she caused her poor "victim" once the land sharks get through with her?

Pablo-you are so right! It is about working together.

In addition, she is a hero! A mom-daughter duo--simply wanting to help--at the right place and time. She saved his life--it is a total no brainer. Gun was next.

Ms. Cross is a citizen hero. Her actions speak to her depth of character and personal bravery. I wish I could shake your hand myself. I sure hope her efforts result in official recognition. Her story is one to be shared with all citizens. Thank you Tanisha Cross - you are a hero!

All the best to you in life.

Assisting the officer!
I hope their department will follow-up with some type of commendation for this brave young lady, with plenty of press coverage! This situation could have easily gone the other way. She stated others were standing around watching when she sprung into action! Hey, were hiring for police officers, if she is interested in a career!
