Force
I am not a police officer but maybe someone could help me understand this. In my opinion after reading the article and watching the video it seems like some policies would allow lethal force in this type of situation. the man picks up a light at I believe 8 feet long and begins poking the officers, he could have thrown the light on top of them in an instant and only one officer had a helmet on. Let me know if this sounds reasonable maybe they were trying to spare his life by tasing him?

Poorly Considered Policy
Well that is one poorly thought out policy. According to the department these officers shouldn't have tased the suspect (an act that he had a pretty good chance of surviving) but should have shot him. Analyzing the incident the suspect is well within the 21 ft danger zone and armed, making a shooting justified. Tasing should not have been an option, according to dept policy. Therefore the suspect sould not have been tased, he should have been shot. I wonder if people would be more or less upset if that would have been the course of action taken?

Can the NYPD bosses be reasonable?
The purpose of a taser is to incapacitate the offender if the officer has reason to believe that he/she or others may suffer bodily harm. In this case the "consumer" (PC) had a 8 ft. long fluorescent light and was "poking" at the officers with it. So what if the "consumer" decided to smash the light over the officer's head, or worse, stab the officers with it. The Lt. made a good call, and yeah, it sucks that Morales had problems and that he died. But I really think that every police officer in the country, including officers in the NYPD, would just like to simply go home at the end of their tour. And yet all over the country, we have administrators second guessing the actions of these officers that put it on the line every day. Amazing!

Just another way the NYPD brass throws its members under the bus. ANYTHING caught on video, no matter what it shows the department makes a decision, and says "it appears the officers acted outside of NYPD guidelines, and the (enter scenerio here) is bad. The officers have been placed on modified assignment (guns, shields taken away and your stuck on the desk, or thrown into Viper unit) and a departmental investigation is under way".

Bottom line, if you draw attention to yourself be it through media or a cell phone camera. YOUR DONE. These people only video tape a portion of the situation, and the department acts on it. They do not stand behind their officers.

This is why alot of NYPD officers refuse to do anything other than the bare minimum. Next time, stand by for Duty Captain and let him make the decision. Because anything a uniformed officer does, is wrong.

"whats that officer, you say he was striking other MOS with an 8 foot jagged light bulb? Sorry, the 10 second video shows 1 swipe of th bulb. The Lou ordered you to use the CED? Why did you follow his orders? Did you know using the CED in this situations was out of our guidelines? No? Did you attempt to devise a plan if the EDP fell? No, why not? We are placing you on modified assignemnt effective immediately, and upon completion of a departmental investigation, disciplinary charges and criminal charges will (most likely) be filed.

Send the firefighters next time. The mental UNhealth system in this country is wacked and it puts law enforcement in fragile situations time and time again.

"my son was a good loving boy" ...WHO TRIED TO STICK A COP WITH A BROKEN LIGHTBULB. Sounds like mom is next to dance naked on a hand rail.

Had the guy jumped to his own death the cops would be crucified as they are right now for protecting themselves. "They should have acted sooner," I can already see it.

As a cop, I'm sick and tired of being put into these vulnerable situations. I'm sick of my brothers and sisters being killed my wackos only to hear from killers families about the killer being the true victim because they had a mental disorder and that they were sweethearts 99.9999percent of the time.

NYPD brass needs to grow some balls and not make knee jerk reactions to such delicate situations. You've hung two officers out to dry without giving them a fair chance.

growing balls
Too me the only people who need to grow balls are all you crying about brass not having them.

Look - cops are humans and make errors. The first step is acceptance. TRY IT! The brass fessed up - hey our officers screwed up and DID NOT FOLLOW POLICY! No one is being "thrown under the bus" as you crybabies like to think - they're being held accountable for their SCREWUP!!

Welcome to the real world - how 99% of the rest of the population live. Screw up on the job? Then you have to answer for your mistakes.

Stop your pansy crying Dennis. If you had it your way no officer would ever do any wrong at anytime. If you want to live in a police run state (you know, kind of like the Nazis ran Germany in WW II) then be my guest. Otherwise, let your manhood drop, recognize that officers make mistakes and LEARN FROM THEM!

Or you could keep crying on your keyboard. Whichever you prefer
