RENO, Nevada (KOLOTV.com) -- A 33-year-old Nevada Highway Patrol trooper passed away today, three days after she was involved in a crash while rushing to a call.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety says Trooper Kara Kelly-Borgognone died overnight.
"She succumbed to the severe injuries she suffered in a car crash while on duty earlier this week," said D.P.S. Public Relations Coordinator Chuck Allen in a statement.
Kelly-Borgognone was critically injured, but kept on life support so that her organs could be transplanted into people who needed them.
"Trooper Kelly-Borgognone was an organ donor. As a final act of selfless service, she wanted to help others live longer lives and better lives," said Allen.
Doctors at Renown Regional Medical Center performed the organ donation procedures, said Allen. The operations ended at 2:45 am Thursday morning.
Trooper Kelly-Borgognone is survived by her husband, Dirk; daughter Blair, 13; and daughter Ashlyn, 3.
