A Greene County deputy was shot and killed last night after responding to a domestic disturbance call, according to WITN-TV.

Deputy John Willis was confronted arriving at 89 Brooke Place in the Brooke Meadow Mobile Home Park at approximately 7:30 p.m. A person, who appeared drunk, shot him twice and then turned the gun on himself, Sheriff Lemmie Smith told the news station.

The gunman was identified as 22-year-old Daniel Meyers, who does not appear to have a criminal record, according to the report.

A neighbor said he knows Meyers and was surprised to hear what happened.

Willis -- who leaves behind two children -- is the third Eastern Carolina deputy to lose his life in the line of duty in the past fifteen months.

Dept. Shot/domestic call
This is such a tragedy. I am so sorry for the innocent lives lost in this awful confrontation. DV is proving to be a real thorn in the side of every LEO. Please be careful out there. God bless and keep Depty. John Willis. Thank you for your service and may the family and friends be comforted in knowing you are at rest 'til that day when we shall be reunited again with those who have gone on before us. God keep you.

Deputy Willis
I feel very bad for the deputy's family. This kind of tragedy is so senseless. Why was there not a back up officer dispatched to aid deputy Willis?

God Bless
Well I really am at a loss for words and my heart is very heavy. My prayers is all I can offer the Willis family. I prayer that you find strength in GOD to help you in this time of need and that he will forever wrap his arms of love around you. I am so sorry for your loss. To his Dept. , brothers continue to be strong and vigilant in this time of sorrow. I do not know Deputy Willis nor your Dept. But you are my brothers and I can only imagine what you must be feeling because I am hurt by this. Pray and be there for each other and the family.
