OAK PARK, Mich. --

The 16-year-old boy wanted in a fatal police shooting in Oak Park has turned himself in, according to police.

An Oak Park police officer, Mason Samborski, was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the area of 10 Mile and Greenfield roads, police said.

Samborski, 28, was performing a routine traffic stop in the area, when he pulled over Jonathon Belton, 16, of Detroit who did not have a driver's license.

The teenager reportedly said he had a parent or a guardian living at a nearby apartment complex and Samborski put the teen in the back of his cruiser and drove.

When they arrived at the apartment complex, the boy struggled with the officer and shot him in the hallway, according to police.

"It's the worst possible thing that can happen in a police department. It's something you never want to face. Obviously our officers are heartbroken and very upset," said Chief John McNeilance of Oak Park Public Safety.

Police said Samborski may have been killed with his own weapon. Investigators are still trying to piece together what exactly happened early Sunday morning.

The search for the suspect ended Sunday afternoon when Belton showed up at the Oak Park Police Department with his father and his pastor to turn himself in.

"I'm shocked. He's a good kid. That's out of his character," said Belton's aunt Lodonn Nash.

Belton is held on first-degree murder complaints.

Samborski was a four-year veteran of the force, police said. He was married with one child.

The Samborski family issued a statement saying,"The family is absolutely devastated by this tragedy. We would like to thank our extended family and friends for their prayers and support. We also extend our thanks to the Oak Park Police Department, as well as all agencies assisting with this investigation and the Providence Hospital Emergency Staff."

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the church.

Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

My condolences to Officer Samborski's wife and child, family, friends, and fellow officers. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

16 years old! What a POS. And he turned himself in with his "pastor", give me a break. And I'm tired of hearing from the suspects' families, "He's a good kid". No he's not! He's a scum-bag, low-life criminal and a cop-killer. You failed at raising him! I hope Belton dies a slow, painful death and then rots in hell!

Officer Samborski, Rest in Peace brother. Thank you for your service.

Go in peace....
It physically sickens me that this Belton kid even draws breath while Officer Samborski's family has to suffer this tragic loss. Awful convenient how all of a sudden this Turd (Belton) finds god after the fact..........."an eye for an eye".
