JASPER COUNTY, Ga. --

A hunter shot and killed a U.S. Forest Service officer in Jasper County, according to Forest Service officials.

Investigators said two men were hunting for coyotes using high-powered rifles and night scopes at the Ocmulgee Bluff Equestrian Recreation Area on the Oconee Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Jasper County late Friday night.

Hunter Norman Clinton Hale, 40, of McDonough mistook Christopher Arby Upton, 37, for game and shot him. Rangers identified Hale's hunting companion as Clifford Allen McGouirk, 41, of Jackson.

"After the shooting, the hunters dialed 911 and reported a hunting incident," said Stephanie Neal Johnson of the Forest Service.

The Forest Service and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division are investigating the incident.

"This is a tragic incident where the loss of a federal officer's life could have been avoided," said Steven Ruppert, apecial agent-in-charge for the Southern Region of the Forest Service. "This is a devastating loss for Chris' family, our agency, other law enforcement officers and his friends and neighbors in Monroe."

Upton is survived by his wife and a 4-year-old daughter.

I am not a hunter. However, I do not see where a human is confused for "game" especially if one is hunting coyotes. I hope a good investigation is conducted. Unless this officer was out of uniform, dressed like a coyote and on his hands and knees, i find this "accident" hard to believe.

Tragic Loss
Tragic loss for the officer's familly.
I don't understand how one could mistake a person for a coyote. They were using even using scopes. I wonder if alcohol was a factor?

The hunter deserves to be in jail for the rest of his life. This isn't an accident. This was stupidity. This could have been avoided. If you have a night scope and hunting for something on four legs that looks like a dog, how in the world can you see someone about 6 foot standing on two legs and think he was game. This family has lost a husband and a 4 year old lost her daddy. He will never see the girl graduate, marry, or anything because of this hunter. Tough to swallow.

Killer
There can be no viable excuse for this tragedy. The term accident and mistake are irrelevent,,,,in my opinion.

Murder
I think this was flat out murder. The hunter had night vision, you can definitely see a man is a man and a coyote is a coyote. If by chance he had questions, you ask those first before shooting not after. How do you explain to a 4 year old little girl that it was an oops. I didn't mean to shoot your daddy. This was pure murder.

There is no excuse for the hunters. It is as clear as day: know your TARGET, AND what is beyond it.

How do coyotes and humans even look the same?
Good prayers to the officers family and friends.
