HONOLULU --

An officer on Tuesday shot a man authorities were tracking in the Ala Moana area, Honolulu Police Department officials said.

The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. near Rycroft and Cedar streets.

Honolulu police began closing off access around the crime scene at around 11 a.m.

Word of the shooting spread quickly in the largely Korean business and residential community. Edison Chen the general manager of the Ace Auto repair shop saw the shooting.

"I heard police officer yelling out of the car. I went out and saw the suspect in the car try to drive the car out," Chen said.

Chen said he saw the suspect hit the officer's car as well as a Unitek truck and a third vehicle as he tried to make a getaway.

"He try and hit the officer and police officer moved to the side... and used the gun," Chen said.

Police said a half an hour earlier they issued an all points bulletin. The suspect who was wanted on an earlier violation was spotted in the Ala Moana area

A patrol officer spotted him again near Kapiolani Boulevard and Piikoi Street and followed him down Cedar Street.

"When he drove toward the police officer, the officer fired his service revolver one time struck the male upper body area. The suspect was taken to an area hospital, where he was last listed in serious condition," Fujii said.

The officer involved is described as a seven-year veteran assigned to the East Honolulu Patrol Division. He was not injured, police said.

"(The) suspect? All I know is: local male, late 20s. He was wanted in an intake parole violation warrant. We have opened up an attempted murder case," Fujii said.

The suspect also faces criminal property damage for ramming the three vehicles.

For more than three hours the shut down of the side streets snarled traffic in the area, affecting businesses, a church and several residences.

"We know we are unconvincing people. We want to make sure we seal the area off -- a wide enough area so we can conduct a thorough investigation," Fujii said.
