SALLISAW, Okla.
--
Timothy Sumpter, one of the two escapees, was found within a half-hour of fleeing the jail. He was caught in the attic of Jenny Hight's home off Ash and Chickasaw streets. Hight said Sumpter entered the space through an opened storage room.
"This was unlocked so he came through here and jumped into the attic there and went in that way," Hight said.
Sumpter was in jail on several warrants, including one related to a burglary.
Hight said she learned of the inmates escape through a phone call and went home to lock up her doors and windows. Hight said when she was leaving the home a police officer flagged her down. Somehow the officer knew something wasn't right at the home and minutes later Sumpter was pulled from Hight's attic and placed in handcuffs.
"I was kind of scared but then I was angry that somebody could violate me like that," Hight said.
Hight said Sumpter damaged several ceilings in her home while he was crawling through the attic but is grateful police were at the scene when they were.
"I have a 3-year-old and a 2-year-old, so Im just glad they weren't here and they were at day care," Hight said.
Matthew Long was booked on public intoxication at the city jail on August 2nd and was being held on two felony charges in Arkansas. Long was captured hours after escaping in Marble City, Okla.
The Sallisaw Police Department said the escapes are under an internal investigation.
Sumpter and Long face additional charges for their escapes.
