SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

A fugitive who led police on a short chase was captured in the back yard of a south Sacramento home after he was spotted by an undercover officer, authorities said.

Jose Baca, 31, remained in jail Wednesday after he was arrested on a no-bail felony warrant for alleged narcotics violations. He is also on probation for a drug-related offense, police said.

Police said an officer in an unmarked police car was working shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday in the area of 23rd and 24th avenues west of Franklin Boulevard when he saw Baca acting suspiciously and looking at homes. Several burglaries have been reported in the area in recent weeks.

The undercover officer called a patrol officer, who tried to stop Baca. Authorities said Baca ran away and began hopping over fences and running through yards.

Police said they began to search the area and eventually found Baca hiding behind a water tank in the yard of a home in the 2600 block of 26th Avenue.

Officers said Baca shed his black hoodie and a tan jacket and shoved them in a corner near the water tank. Police found the clothing and a pair of white gloves.
