New Jersey Police Officer Suffers Brain Bleed After Being Hit in the Head

A Jersey City police officer hit in the head was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a brain hematoma, a lip injury and a swollen right hand.

A Jersey City, New Jersey police officer was seriously injured while breaking up a street fight early Sunday morning.

The officer responded reports of a street fight outside of a home near the Wilkinson Avenue intersection with Arlington Avenue around 12:30 a.m. when officials say that 36-year-old Robert Vega became violent, according to The Jersey Journal.

City Spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione told the newspaper that Vega shoved one officer and began repeatedly hitting another in the head.

The officer hit in the head was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a brain hematoma, a lip injury and a swollen right hand.

During the struggle, an officer used pepper spray attempting to arrest Vega and two other police officers were sprayed when it was deployed and were brought to hospital for "decontamination."

Vegas is facing two counts of assault on a police officer and a disorderly conduct charge.
