Dickson County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Baker was shot and killed while on patrol Wednesday.

DICKSON COUNTY, Tennessee -- The Dickson County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed while on patrol Wednesday had deep ties to Maury County.

Daniel Baker, 32, a sergeant with the sheriff’s office in Dickson, was a native of Columbia and a graduate of Columbia Central High School.

The son of a Spring Hill Police officer, Baker, together with his wife Lisa Shellack Baker, have a young daughter.

“Our hearts are shattered,” Sheriff Jeff Bledsoe said. “He is one of our best deputies. He is one of the guys who puts it on the line every day to keep our community safe and that is what he was doing today.”

Bledsoe said the deputy worked hard, and climbed the ranks of the department.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Sgt. Daniel Baker responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle. Dispatch then lost contact with the deputy. Using a GPS tracker on his patrol car, authorities found Baker dead inside the vehicle at another location two miles away.

The suspected, identified by footage from Baker’s body camera, has been determined to be Steven Wiggins.

Wiggins is described as a white male with balding brown hair, according to a photograph released by the TBI. He is 6′1″ and weighs 220 pounds and is considered to be armed and dangerous and may be on foot.

TBI representative Susan Niland said all tips are bing investigated fully and the search area has expanded to include Hickman County.

“People question us sometimes why we are so on edge,” Bledsoe said. “This is a prime example of why we have to take care of each other and take care of our citizens. We ask of your help so we can help this person be held fully responsible and fully accountable.”
