HARVEY, Louisiana -- A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office sergeant was shot in the leg early Sunday while trying to stop a pair of people in a stolen car in Harvey, an agency spokesman said.

The sergeant’s wound was not life-threatening, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Glen Boyd said. Other deputies who had arrived to assist took two suspects into custody.

The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. after the sergeant pulled the stolen car over into the parking lot of a convenience store at the corner of Harvey and Manhattan boulevards. A man in the car emerged from the vehicle with his hands up as if he was about surrender, but then he hid behind a gasoline pump, pulled a handgun out, and fired up to three times at the sergeant.

The sergeant was hit in the right leg, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto told WWL-TV. The sergeant returned fire but didn't strike the attacker.

Both the shooter and a companion were arrested by other deputies who soon showed up to the scene, Lopinto said.

The wounded deputy was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and is expected to recover.

No names have been released in connection with the incident.
