A woman attempted to fire a gun at the head of a Minnesota trooper, who in defense shot her after the firearm malfunctioned during the incident Monday.

Trooper Mark Peterson stopped to help Melody Victoria Gray and Domonique Maurice Crayton around 10:10 a.m. after thier vehicle slid into the median of Interstate 94 just east of Moorhead, according to The Duluth News Tribune.

The driver and passenger gave the trooper fake names and the car didn't have proper plates. As Peterson worked to verify the information given by the car’s occupants, the passenger and driver appeared to be trying to drive the car out of the ditch, but were unable to.

Upon learning that the car had been reported stolen in Germantown, Wis., he positioned his patrol car to prevent the couple from driving away and asked Crayton to exit the vehicle.

As Peterson attempted to handcuff Crayton, Gray got out of the car and pointed a 9mm handgun at the trooper's head and appeared to pull the trigger, but the gun did not fire.

Peterson pulled himself and Crayton away toward the back of the car, and put Crayton to the ground as Gray tried to chamber a round in her gun and raised it toward the trooper. The trooper then fired his weapon and hit her in the right arm.

Crayton was taken into custody and Gray given medical attention until an ambulance arrived and was taken to Essentia Health in Fargo for treatment.

Charges against her are pending with the Clay County Attorney's Office.

Peterson was not injured and the shooting was captured on dashboard camera video, which has not yet been released.
