Phoenix Police Department Hits the Streets With VIEVU’s Wearable Cameras

April 16, 2013
The Phoenix Police Department is now among VIEVU’s 3000 customers using the wearable cameras.

Seattle, Wash. — VIEVU, the industry leader in body worn video (BWV) for law enforcement and other security organizations, today announced the City of Phoenix, AZ Police Department is now among VIEVU’s 3000 customers that are using the small wearable cameras. VIEVU’s cameras were the department’s first choice because of the ease of use on the officers and secure file management platform called VERIPATROLTM. For the Phoenix Police Department this is a collaborative grant project with Arizona State University (ASU).

The awarded grant will allow the Phoenix Department and ASU to jointly examine the impact of this technology on crime, public and police accountability, as well as perceptions of legitimacy, trust and satisfaction with the police. Specifically, the program will attempt to determine if on-officer video cameras enhance officers’ ability to conduct domestic violence and other criminal investigations. It will also seek to determine if on-officer cameras have a measurable impact on both officer and citizen behavior.

Dr. Charles Katz the Watts Family Director and Professor at (ASU) will utilize various survey instruments during the course of the program to evaluate the impact of the technology with regard to citizens’ attitudes and perceptions. Dr. Katz stated, “The Smart Policing Initiative administered by BJA is a perfect opportunity to understand the impact on body worn cameras on suspects, victims, officers, as well as on case processing. In Phoenix we will be particularly focused on the impact of body worn cameras on domestic violence and officer accountability. We are also interested in how the use of this technology might deter individuals from committing secondary violations such as resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, and trying to escape.”

According to another study sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 93% of police-misconduct cases in which video is available result in the officer's exoneration; 50% of complaints are immediately withdrawn when video evidence is used; while 94% of citizens support the use of video.

VIEVU’s wearable cameras are about the size of a pager and easily clip onto an officer's lapel or belt, making it efficient for officers to video and record ALL their actions. The recorded video is secured and authenticated for court use, while a chain of evidence log tracks who accesses the video and what they do with it. Steve Ward, President and Founder of VIEVU stated “When one of the largest police departments in the country select our products it is a reflection of our hard work developing and designing secure wearable cameras for cops. The most exciting part of this project will be working with the Phoenix Police Department and Arizona State University evaluating the real time data on the impacts and benefits of our wearable cameras for The City of Phoenix”.

VIEVU body worn video cameras come with VERIPATROL™, a secure video file management system which includes several layers of security protection to ensure chain of custody and evidence protection. Officers cannot edit or delete the video and additional security prevents unauthorized access if the camera is lost or stolen.
