LOUISVILLE, Ky. --

A Metro Police officer is facing criminal charges.

On Monday, a grand jury indicted Lt. Jeff Manning on one count of criminal facilitation to impersonating a police officer.

The indictment says Manning allowed his son to impersonate an officer earlier this year. Sources said he took his son on patrol and allowed him to handcuff suspects.

The charge is a misdemeanor.

Metro Police have suspended Manning pending the outcome of the case.

This is just a case of bad parenting why would you subject your kids to the people you are arresting.

Bad parenting
The Lt. needs to step back and pull his head out. Why would anybody want to expose thier child to possible harm .

Unfortunately the article does not state the age of the son. I don't see anything wrong with this, provided that the "child" is of an acceptable age to "ride along". As far as allowing him to handcuff suspects, I believe most states allow for citizens to be granted limited police powers (including arrest) when the officer has requested their assistance. Isn't this just like the media? Never giving the whole story.

Handcuffing suspects
In my opinion it is pretty dumb on the Lt. part to let his son handcuff suspects. However, if the son meets the departments ride-along program policy, then I really dont see a problem. What I mean is, cant a citizen make a citizen's arrest? It's just like loss prevention officers in Walmart making an arrest. Same rules should apply with a police officers son. He is a citizen after all.

Handcuffing/ Rida along
I'm sure the Lt. was just encouraging his son to follow in his footsteps as a police officer. I see nothing wrong with his actions. Woe to the dept for not supporting there own. This website should print the whole story. (age, rida along policy of that dept.) Or don't print it at all.

I don't see how this story makes it on here... It's a lopsided gossip article. Please print out the age of the "child", more details behind what the incident, and the department's policies, etc. Unbelievable!

Yea this makes no sense, when I use to ride with Officers I was taught how to cuff a suspect by a few of them. Mind you the suspect didn't do anything major wrong, but still. I think they are going over board on this and shouldn't press charges, but rather warn them or maybe a few days off without pay.

I don't think it should be dealt with as a criminal manner. The Department should have dealt with it internally. I have assisted officers as a civilian for years before becoming an officer myself. As usual putting the people down that protect us everyday. If it's not LE its our Military men and women. Were would we be without God and them!

Geez, the first time I ever handcuffed anyone I was 12 years old on a ride along with a neighbor. I have been in about 25 years now hand have taught about a half a million recruits, explorers and yes, even my own son and daughter, how to handcuff. Sounds like Louisville has gone the way of most of the large cities in being too worried about the political correctness and not about the Police work. Good luck LT. I feel your pain.

Before I was the police I used to go on ride alongs alot with cops I knew. I handcuffed MANY a suspect becasue of the distance of backup. I was NOT impersonating an officer. I was assisting a police officer who was without backup.

This is retarded. The DA that put togeather this case should be shuned by all the officers and made to look like a fool untill he quits or gets fired.
