Fire him now, and give him the state maximum for DWI. what a fool, and what a black eye to law enforcement.

Officer DUI
Lets not just throw this officer in the fire, maybe he needs some treatment for alcohol abuse. We all know that a police officers job is stressful and sometimes they resourt to alcohol consumption to deal with it. If he's treatable lets suspend him and get his the treatment he needs so that he can be a productive officer again!

He can get all the treatment he needs after he pleads guilty and accepts the consequences. Part of me says he shouldn't be treated any differently than anyone else charged with DUI, but on the other hand, it takes a real jackass to be DUI on duty when under public trust. Plus he lied. "Not much" my ass.

All you assholes that have never made a mitake can cast the first stone... society always wants to hang cops out to dry.. you have no idea what we live with... let him go through the criminal justice system and get some treatment.. of course society will continue to treat him like a robot, rather than a human.. if cops are held to a higher standard, we should be offered help on a higher level.. we take so much crap.. more so than sometimes we realize, and we internalize it all

you know it is officers like you that we do not need wokring our streets. if this office had spoken with his department seeking help for his problem, im sure they would have been more than willing to help. you are correct in saying that everyone makes mistakes, but it is completely different to get in your personal car drinking and get into an accident or to get into your unit drunk. are they both wrong yes, BUT WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! if it is truly your job that is driving you to drink becuase of "putting up with crap" as you state it, then i think it is time to take a step back and reevaluate our life and what you want to do with it.

I agree with Rick and Right Here. For an officer to show up for a shift intoxicated, there has to be some underlying reason. Granted, it is never okay to to drive while intoxicated, but those who do need treatment, not crucifixion.

Additional Information
Additional information about Utter...

In July 2007, Utter, a 7-year police veteran at Springettsbury, was involved in a fatal shooting of a prisoner in custody. He was cleared in October 2007 by York County District Attorney Stan Rebert, who ruled Utter used justifiable force after he was attacked by Ronald T. Whitaker Jr.

While being held for robbing a grocery store, Whitaker tried to hang himself with his shoelaces, according to the district attorney's office. Utter found Whitaker and revived him, but Whitaker then became violent, officials said.

Utter used a Taser on Whitaker, but it worked only momentarily, police said.

The fight spilled into a hallway, where Whitaker backed Utter into a corner, had his nightstick and was trying to grab his gun, Springettsbury Township Police Chief David Eshbach said.

Utter fired twice.

Whitaker's family has filed a wrongful death civil suit against the police department, Eshbach, Utter and Springettsbury Township.

The underlying reason doesn't matter. Utter was responsible for arresting other people who drive drunk. They have things going on in their lives too. But did he give them a break because they are putting up with crap in their lives? The man Utter shot had a lot of bad things happening in his life, but no one had any compassion for him. He was nothing but a scumbag because he was on drugs. Now the very man who killed him has excuses to put other people's lives in danger. That's a terrible double standard. He drove drunk. He deserves to be treated like anyone else who does the same thing.
