ROSENBERG, Texas --

A police officer was shot while training at a gun range, officials said.

Stafford police said one of its officers was training at the Rosenberg Police Department shooting range on Avenue A near 8th Street at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators said the officer, a 20-year veteran of the department, was somehow shot in the leg.

The officer was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Officials said his injuries were not life-threatening and he was expected to be released on Friday.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was training for his annual recertification, police said.

Several law enforcement agencies in Fort Bend County use the Rosenberg shooting range.

Stafford police said they will conduct their own investigation, but Rosenberg police will also investigate since it was in their jurisdiction.

Annual??!! recertification?!! What happened to monthly or at the most quarterly? Maybe this was some special weapons or overall tactical re-cert, and not the usual qualification course, I sure hope so.
