OCOEE, Fla. --

A routine traffic checkpoint in Orange County turned into a wild crime scene overnight when one man decided to speed around the officers and make a run for the turnpike.

Ocoee police were on West Colonial Drive for what they are calling a very successful DUI checkpoint Friday night.

“Things are going really well for us. The great part is we're getting a lot of compliance from the community" said Sergeant William Wagner.

Friday night was the first night of the operation and cars lined up waiting for their turn at the checkpoint.

At about 11:00pm, one driver chose not to wait in that line and instead sped right through the checkpoint.

Ocoee Police say about 100 law enforcement officers from several different agencies were working the checkpoint and saw the dangerous driver take off.

The driver later crashed as he tried to get on the turnpike.

"We were able to locate that vehicle after the crash and inside that vehicle we located approximately 3 pounds of marijuana. K-9 units were able to apprehend that individual later, a short distance from the vehicle" said Sergeant William Wagner.

Police say the driver was the only person hurt. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. His name has not been released.
