GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. --

Suspects in a smash-and-grab robbery collided with a tractor-trailer Monday during their getaway, according to Gwinnett County police.

The crash happened at the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road and the on ramp of Interstate-85 southbound at about 12:30 p.m.

The two suspects in the car are accused of robbing a jewelry store at the Mall Of Georgia. According to police, the suspects fled the scene and lost control and struck a median wall. Police said the car continued on and exited onto Lawrenceville Suwanee Road where the driver lost control again and struck a tractor-trailer.

Officers on the scene said they located a duffle bag next to the suspect's vehicle that contained items taken from the jewelry store.

The two passengers of the car were seriously injured and were taken to area hospitals, police said.

Police said the passengers had to be cut out of the car.

"They made a real effort to get the people out there. There were several fireman with jaws of life and things of that nature trying to take care of that," said witness Jeff Kantor.

"It wasn't more than a couple of minutes, three or four police cars and they all ran around and drew their guns," said witness Eddie Day.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
