WASHINGTON, Pa. --

A man is in the hospital after a confrontation with Washington police, who said he had a seizure and became combative, forcing them to use a Taser on him.

Washington city police said 49-year-old Ronald Petruney was walking in the 1000 block of Jefferson Avenue when he had a seizure. A police officer noticed the seizure and stopped and came over to Petruney.

According to police, the officer tried to help Petruney and keep him from moving into the middle of the street. That's when, police say, the man became violent.

"Mr. Petruney actually charged the officer, swinging at him. And at that point the struggle ensued between the officer and Mr. Petruney," said Lt. Dan Stanek of the Washington Police Department. "The officer had requested additional officers and medics to arrive. As they were arriving, the officer was still involved in the struggle on the ground. Mr. Petruney was biting the officer several times. The officer sustained at least three, possibly four bite marks that he received medical attention for. As Mr. Petruney was being subdued, trying to get him under control, the officers employed the tasers."

Police said they used a Taser on Petruney twice -- once in the leg and once in the back. Police said that's when Petruney went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Washington Hospital.

Petruney remains in the hospital. Police said they plan to charge him with resisting arrest and aggravated assault.

The police officer was treated for his bite wounds and released from the hospital.

Lets face it
Lets face it, Tasers have their problems. Like any tool it has its good points and bad. But you would have to be blind to ignore the horror stories. Tasing kids, cardiac arrests, and even a case also in PA of tasing a subject in a house with gasoline all over the floor. The taser is a great tool but when can we all agree it isnt a panacea to cover ever ill. There continue to be cases where its use has side effects not planned for or other cases where people skills could have been tried first. I know it has been a while since I have been on the street but back then we had PR-24, and guns and fists, thats it. Did we have subjects die in custody, sure, but I dont remember anything causing as much controversy as the whole Taser issue. Plus this whole thing with violent subjects. Anyone ever deal with someone diabetic and their blood sugar is off? They can be the devil incarnate when their blood glucose is off and be Mother Teresa born again when they are stable. Dont curse the perp until you get the full story either.

not an easy decision to taser a man having a seziure.....but really if the taser was not available what would the decision be......a 49 year old man.....and to charge with resisting arrest when he is having a medical emergency.......kinda unbelievable talking about insult to injury....leson learned...do not walk the streets when you are a citizen.....you will be tasered given a heart attack and face jail time for walking down the street....and don't call 911

Medical emergency or not. The officer was attacked. The taser is the least damaging device at an officer's disposal. The alternative is expandable baton, fists, etc. The charges need to be filed because they are appropriate. If it comes out that Petruney's actions were due to a medical condition, the charges will be dropped.
The other considerations are; "Is this an existing medical condition? or "Was it caused by some other reason (drugs)?"

Shattered Cop, I have been using a PR-24 for almost 30 years and the Taser is better, period. The reason for the controversy is the ACLU and Amnesty International got it in their heads we were torturing people with it. Because someone has a heart attach after being tasered, doesn't mean the Taser caused it. He might have been handcuffed, too, but the handcuffs didn't cause it. He was already having medical distress, so don't be too quick to blame the Taser. It actually causes fewer injuries, to both suspects and officers.
