SAN DIEGO
--
The FBI is describing the man dubbed the "Geezer Bandit" as frail but dangerous. Investigators also said despite his age, he is sure to strike again.
While the Geezer Bandit looks like he can be anyone's grandfather, investigators said he has become more brazen as he's used a gun in two of his most recent robberies.
"He's not just a little bit older; he's in his mid 70s. He's very thin ... very wrinkled skin," said FBI agent April Langwell.
The FBI believes his liver spots and oxygen tank are real and not an elaborate disguise.
"This particular bandit became a big concern to us after the robbery in Rancho Santa Fe where he brandished a weapon and threatened the teller," said Langwell.
In August, the man robbed a bank inside a Von's grocery store in Santee. He has since hit four more banks, with the latest on Monday in which he used a gun and got away quickly.
"If this is an elderly man it would appear there must be some sort of desperation," said former police officer Kevin LaChapelle.
LaChapelle said it is impossible to know why the man, who should be enjoying his sunset years swinging a golf club, is wielding a gun for quick cash.
"An elderly person
if they have not planned and have no retirement, or if they lost their retirement because of the economic times
those are scary times for people," said LaChapelle.
The FBI has seen fewer bank robberies in San Diego this year compared to 2008. They said they usually solve a little more than half of the bank robbery cases they work on.
So far, agents said the Geezer Bandit has slipped away five times partly because he blends in by dressing nicely and does not cause a scene.
Age and motive aside, agents said do not count on them using kid gloves with him.
"Well, you're not going to see any leniency from the FBI. We're out to catch this bank robber," said Langwell.
Banks are hoping someone recognizes the man and turns him in by offering a $16,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
