WARREN, Mich. --

A Warren police officer was stabbed during an altercation Friday afternoon.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said they received a call about a disturbance at a car wash business at Groesbeck Highway and Eight Mile Road around 12:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, the person creating the disturbance was gone.

Several witnesses pointed to the home across the street from the car wash and said the 20-year-old suspect was in there. The house was located on the street on the 20000 block of Waltham Street.

When officers went to the home, the suspect went into the house, grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed one of the officers several times, police said.

"The officer was cut up on the skull area, cut on the left side of the cheek," said Dwyer.

Witness Ron Carnwath said the slashed officer stumbled out of the home and went back to his car and radioed, "Officer down, officer down!"

An excavation crew nearby saw the injured officer and ran over to assist him.

"He ran to his truck to grab some rags and as I'm kind of walking up to him, he says, 'Anything! grab a jacket.' So I took my jacket and held it to his head," said Carnwath.

The suspect was taken into custody by another officer.

The injured officer was transported to Bi-County Hospital.

There is no word on the officer's condition.

The suspect's name is not being released, but police said they are working on an attempted murder warrant.

I hope this officer makes a speedy recovery. Too bad he couldn't get a shot off, but did a great job getting backup there quickly to arrest the nutcase.

If you hate to monday morning quarterback then dont it.

He wasnt simply slashed here, he was butchered with a butcher knife, I can only imagine the wounds he suffered on his head. He probably went into full defense/retreat mode, and probably was in shock.

The fact he was able to compose himself enough to find his car during that time of shock is due to his training and adrenaline.

Considering his wounds, I wouldnt be shocked that he stumbled away and collapsed or fell somewhere. He was able to find his car though and radio for help.

The only thing I would of wanted was for this perp to be full of rounds, but at least this officer will hopefully recover in full and the perp will receive a lengthy sentence.

Kinda of hard to judge the guy when you weren't there. The most important thing he is lived to tell about it.

Speedy recovery and best wishes!

Knife / shooting
If you are unable to draw and fire three well placed rounds in one second flat, please practice until you can.
I've been a police firearms instructor for 29 years, and I fully realize that each officer has different capabilities. The ability to draw and fire accurately as well as quickly is one thing every officer should strive to learn. This applies to detectives, SRO, patrol, court security, narcotics, etc. In other words, every single officer.

Criminal Justice System
Receive a lengthy sentence? Can't see that happening with our "Wonderful" system. Becoming more and more liberal on a daily basis. I argue with fellow officers and many continuously say "We have the best system in the world." I respond back by saying a I should've been a meteorologist. Where else can you be wrong constantly and still have a job?

No matter the circumstances better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. We have a split second to make a decision and "liberals" have days, weeks, months, to figure out what we could've done differently.

Based on the information given I say to the officer"good job and hope you have a speedy recovery."

Update- the officer will be ok.... after a CT scan, some medical attention and a few stitches to his head ... he was released from the hospital.
The suspect was arrested.
Thanks for all of the kind thoughts.

Glad to hear the officer is going to be ok. Hope the suspect gets life in prison.

I'm curious, why would the officer go inside the house by himself? This started as a disturbance call at the car wash. Once the officer was told he went into the house, why not get a cover officer there with you.

I've been to Warren Michigan, and its not a super small town or anything. Just curious why he had to be there by himself.

that suspect is real lucky he didn't get 2 in the chest and 1 between the eyes.
