CLEVELAND --

The cities of Cleveland and Akron got more than 1,000 firearms off the streets in gun buy-back events this weekend.

The city of Cleveland's 2008 gun buy-back program netted 324 firearms Saturday at the Cleveland Convention Center, Lt. Thomas Stacho said. Last year, police collected 421 firearms.

In exchange for operable handguns, citizens got a $50 gas or food gift card, two tickets to a Cavs game and were entered into a raffle to win up to $1,000.

Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Akron said it collected about 580 guns on Friday and almost 200 on Saturday as part of its Goods for Guns buyback program.

Anyone who brought in a firearm received a $100 grocery card from Acme Fresh Markets.

The weapons, which will be destroyed, were loaded into a large plastic garbage can.

The Rev. Marc Neal said he thinks the program will help prevent accidental shootings at home. Neal said each year there are about 4,800 accidental shootings in the United States.

Sponsors of the Akron buy-back program included Akron police, Crime Stoppers, Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church and HFA Marketing Communications.

The Cleveland program was sponsored by the Cleveland police, ArcelorMittal, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial Society.

gun buy back
This program did not work for us, the bad guys would sell us 2 or 3 cheap guns, and with the money go on the street and buy a nice functional Glock pistol....beware of this..

This has never been proven to reduce crime.
Fred C Dobbs is correct in above post.
How can you buy back something you never owned?

"Buy Back"
I have no idea why cities think this is a good program. Who ever told the people who head these up that an unarmed populace is a safe populace. Instead of focusing on firearms why can't our leaders focus on punishment. Taking guns out of a citizens hand simply because the 100$ grocery coupon will feed their family for a week during hard times is ridiculous. We lose many more people to vehiclular accidents than we do firearms but no one is heading up a vehicle buy back program. Stop trying to look like your solving problems, punish individuals that use firearms inappropriately harshly and regularly, stop slapping them on the wrist. That will reduce your violence problem. Take a lesson from England and Australia . . gun bans did not reduce violent crime stop kidding yourselves. A law abiding armed populace is more a crime deterent than an officer who is three minutes out in response time.

Gun Buy Backs dont work
Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year or about 6,850 times a day. This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.

buyback
I wonder how many murder weapons, stolen weapons, evidence to other crimes were "bought back" only to be destroyed.
Just on a side note: A buyback occurred years ago when this became popular, in the Kansas City area and there were idiots, (law abiding, that is), on TV and radio bragging about how they were turning in there $600 handguns for a $100 voucher, old ladies turning in their husbands WWII handguns! WRONG PARTICIPANTS!
Anyway, criminals dont follow gun laws, nor will them trading in a cheapo street gun for $100 in food, in any way keep them from doing crime! BUT...its all about touchy feely looking good

Gun Buyback
Just when you think you have heard all the crap there is in one day and then I see this. This is right off the top of the crap-o-meter. Somehow, somewhere somebody got to feel all warm in fuzzy I suppose. There are those that needed to eat so they took the last mementos they had and sold them for next to nothing. (I'll bet those don't make it to the melting pot) Then there are the ex's getting even. The mom's that knew where Jr. hid his gun before he was run off to prison, so now is a good time to dump the evidence. The one's that are stolen and too hot to sell legally. I mean tell me they at least check serial numbers against the list of known stolen weapons so they can be returned to the victims of robbery. That leaves the Bad Guy that committed a crime with the weapon and figures no time like right now to get rid of the murder weapon. I'll bet these clowns even guarantee amnesty. I mean they do at least test fire for a ballistic sample to run through the FBI's collection of ballistics involving a crime don't they? (how many cases will now never be closed?)Please tell me they do. Last I heard that is what Leo's do. When given a chance. But when you have clowns with ideas like these running things I am guessing they are they same stupid people that have the same stupid reasoning when it comes to their police force. No wonder a good LEO spends most the time with his back against the wall with administration. The only criminal weapon you got was the one the criminal wanted you to have. Why not auction the weapons off to law abiding citizens and put the money back into the police budget. Do some good anyway. HA! They probably melt them down and sell the scrap steel and buy trees with the money.
