ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. --

Alamance County deputies are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains near Dickie Mill Road on Saturday.

Sheriff Terry Johnson said it appeared the remains had been decomposing for a few months.

"Basically what you have is the skull and the torso and some anklebones and that's basically it. The rest of them are scattered and that's why we're doing the search that we're doing today," Johnson said.

The remains have not been identified, but Johnson said there was an open missing persons case in the county – 49-year-old Tamara Ann Liner was reported missing by her son last September.

She was last seen in July at a Burlington McDonald's where she worked.

"Every death is treated as a homicide until proven different," Johnson said.
