FAIRFIELD, Connecticut -- A Connecticut State Police trooper is recovering after he was trapped inside his patrol car following a crash early Sunday morning.
Trooper Gregory Sawicki was out in the area of Interstate 95 Northbound, in the town of Fairfield when he was providing assistance to the driver of a disabled vehicle in the median, according to a news release.
Despite having his emergency lights activated, a vehicle traveled from the roadway and crashed into the back of Sawicki’s cruiser. The cruiser was then pushed into the back of the disabled vehicle.
Sawicki was extricated from his cruiser and both the driver of the disabled vehicle and that vehicle's passenger needed to be extracated as well.
"Thank God for the members of the Fairfield Fire Department who wasted no time and made sure that all parties were safely removed from their vehicles," Connecticut State Police officials said in a statement.
Sawicki and the occupants of the disabled vehicles were all transported to the hospital for injuries. Although injuries reported were serious in nature, none of them were considered life-threatening.
"We asked that you keep all involved parties in your thoughts and we hope to use this as a reminder to all drivers to be aware of your surroundings. Obey all traffic law but most importantly slow down and move over when you see any emergency vehicle parked on the side of the road," the statement reads. "It could be the difference between life and death."
