Louisiana Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Crash While On Way to Work

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Lt. Steven Whitstine was killed in a single-vehicle crash while on his way to work and his K-9 partner was injured Thursday morning.

ZACHARY, Louisiana -- An East Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputy was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning.

Lt. Steven Whitstine, 42, who served in the agency's K-9 division, was on his way to work around 6:30 a.m. when the collision occurred on Pride Port Hudson Road at Pin Oak Lane, according to a news release.

The deputy's K-9, who was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local veterinarian for treatment.

The more than 8-year veteran of the force previously served for 9 years with the Baker Police Department.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Whitstine is survived by his wife, Deputy Elisha Whitstine, and thier children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
