LAFAYETTE, Indiana -- A Indiana State Police trooper was killed in a rollover crash late Friday night while responding to a call for assistance.

Trooper Peter R. Stephan was traveling northbound on Old State Road 25, south of Stair Road around 10:25 p.m. when his 2018 Dodge Charger patrol car entered a curve and left the east side of the road before it rolled at least once and struck a utility pole, according to a news release.

Officials said the 27-year-old was going to help another trooper who had called for assistance in Americus prior to the crash.

Stephan was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family. We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Stephan’s family, friends and co-workers", Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter said in a statement.

The four-year veteran of the Indiana State Police is survived by his wife and six month-old daughter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
