Louisiana Police Officer Killed in Crash

A Montgomery, Louisiana police officer died in a crash after he lost control of his patrol car Friday night.

Officer Kirt Ricks III was driving his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car northbound on on U.S. Highway 71 around 6:30 p.m. when he lost control and ran off the right side of the road, according to The Town Talk.

Officials said that the 24-year-old officer overcorrected before his vehicle traveled into the southbound lane, striking a pickup truck driven by 65-year-old Gary W. Pinder.

Both Ricks and Pinder were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the men were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

A passenger in Pinder's truck, identified as 58-year-old Robert L. Carter, also was not wearing his seat belt, but sustained only minor injuries. He was taken to Rapides Regional Trauma Center in Alexandria for treatment.

The crash is currently under investigation.
