A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper died after his cruiser was struck on a highway near Greenville early Tuesday morning.

Trooper Daniel K. Rebman Jr. was inside his patrol car, parked in an emergency lane in the southbound side of Interstate 385 near the Bridges Road exit shortly before 12:30 a.m., when the crash occurred, according to WSPA-TV.

Officials say a pickup truck traveled out of its lane and hit the patrol car from behind with the trooper still sitting inside.

Rebman was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"The Highway Patrol and DPS are a family, and we are here to support Trooper Rebman and his family during this time," South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith said in a statement immediately following the crash. "We ask the public to keep Trooper Rebman and his family in their thoughts and prayers."

No one else was injured in the collision and all southbound lanes of I-385 were closed for several hours before being reopened later in the morning.

Rebman joined the force as part of the Basic Class 99 in September 2016. He began his time with the South Carolina Highway Patrol in the Charleston and Berkeley area before being transferred to Troop Three in the Greenville area.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the collision.
