SAN LEANDRO, California — A theft suspect has been arrested in a vehicle assault on two police officers Sunday night, officials said Monday.
Terry Gordon, 57, of Oakland was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and felony evading, and taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. Detectives will present a case Wednesday to the Alameda County district attorney’s office.
Gordon’s vehicle, a black 1998 Lexus ES300, was found around 9 a.m. in Oakland. When officers tried to stop the Lexus, Gordon led police on a brief chase before crashing into a parked vehicle. Officers then took him into custody without incident.
Both officers were able to positively identity Gordon and the Lexus, which had damage consistent with Sunday’s collision, San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou said.
“We are grateful that this subject has been located and arrested,” Benabou said. “We are also very thankful that both officers are doing well and we expect a full recovery. Thank you to everyone who extended their thoughts and prayers for our officers.”
Police said one of the two officers injured has been released from a hospital and that the other, a woman officer, hopefully will be released soon.
The officers were hurt about 8:45 p.m. Sunday after investigating a shoplifting incident at Safeway, 699 Lewelling Boulevard, just east of Washington Avenue.
Officers ordered the suspect to stop, but he ignored commands and got into his vehicle, starting it and driving off. The suspect struck both officers, and ambulance crews took them to a local hospital for care.
