GREEN BAY, Wisconsin -- A Green Bay police dog was stabbed multiple times while responding to a call Sunday night.
Officers responded around 8:19 p.m. to reports of a man with a gun on the 1300 block of Western Avenue, according to WBAY-TV.
The suspect had threatened to shoot family members and law enforcement, Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith told the news station.
As the suspect exited the home, officers deployed K-9 Pyro, who bit the suspect before he was stabbed multiple times in the neck. Officers used a taser on the suspect and took him into police custody.
Pyro was transported and treated by veterinarians at the Fox Valley Animal Referral Center in Appleton. The 2-and-a-half year-old Belgian Malinois has been with the department for one year and is trained as a narcotics and tracking dog.
"Pyro is out surgery and has serious injuries to his esophagus which pose the greatest danger to him. His veterinarian says that the next 24 hours will be critical," a statement from the Green Bay Police Department reads. "It is hoped that if he continues to recover that he may return home to continue recovering with his handler and family."
