A North Carolina police officer was saved by his ballistic vest after he was shot in the back during an apparent ambush late Friday night.

Statesville Police Officer Tyler Horn and another officer were on foot patrol around 11 p.m. near the intersection of Raleigh Avenue and Fifth Street when someone stepped out of the shadows behind them and fired multiple rounds in their direction, according to The Record and Landmark.

Horn was rushed to Iredell Memorial Hospital in a police vehicle, and was released early Saturday morning.

A suspect had not been identified as of Saturday afternoon and police did not say how many shots were fired, or whether the officers returned fire.

The shooting is currently under investigation.
