Two Detroit police officers sitting in their marked patrol car were ambushed by gunmen Wednesday night.
The officers were parked along McClellan Avenue near St. Paul Street on the city's east side looking for stolen vehicles around 10:30 p.m. when a car suddenly pulled up behind them, according to WXYZ-TV.
"The rear passenger exited with a handgun in his hand and pointed it at the officers," Capt. John Svec told reporters. "The officers bailed from the vehicle and exchanged gunfire."
The officers were dodging bullets and firing back during the shootout. It's not clear how many suspects were shooting at them.
Officials said that there were at least two people in the beige or brown four-door vehicle.
At one point during the confrontation, one of the suspects took off on foot while the remaining suspects fled the scene in the vehicle.
Neither of the officers were injured and officials believe that the suspects were also uninjured.
Michigan State Police helicopters and K-9 units were tracking the suspects overnight.
