Man Sentenced in Ambush of Vegas Officers

A man was sentenced on Monday in the ambush shooting of Las Vegas Metro Police Officers Thomas Clevenger and Sergio Orizabal on Sept. 6, 2015.

A man was sentenced on Monday in the ambush shooting of two Las Vegas Metro police officers in 2015.

Francisco Urias-Quintana, who was 17 when the shooting occurred, will spend the next 15 years behind bars, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A Clark County jury in July found Urias-Quintana of variety of charges, including two counts of attempted murder.

The ambush attack took place on Sept. 6, 2015 as Urias-Quintana approached two officers who were in thier patrol car stopped at a red light near Tropicana Avenue and Nellis Boulevard. He then fired three shots from a semi-automatic weapon.

Officer Thomas Clevenger was shot in the hand while his partner, Sergio Orizabal, escaped injury. Orizabal chased down and arrested Urias-Quintana.

Last year, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department awarded both Clevenger and Orizabal the Medal of Valor, and Clevenger was given the Purple Heart.
