Convicted Cop-Killer Denied Early Release

July 17, 2017
Daniel Cummings pleaded guilty in 2007 to manslaughter by culpable negligence in the death of University of Mississippi Officer Robert Langley.

After initially considering granting the early release of a convicted cop killer, the Mississippi Department of Corrections has reversed its position.

Daniel Cummings pleaded guilty in 2007 to manslaughter by culpable negligence in the Oct. 21, 2006 death of University of Mississippi Officer Robert Langley and is currently serving a term of 20 years in prison, according to The Oxford Eagle.

Cummings, a student at Ole Miss when the incident occurred, was pulled over for a traffic stop by Langley when he suddenly pulled away, dragging the officer more than 200 yards to his death.

"The offender was being considered for release under Earned Release Supervision. He is no longer being considered for release," MDOC Director of Communications Grace Fisher told the newspaper.

According to Lafayette County Circuit Court records, a Notification of Release was filed last Thursday stating that 31-year-old Cummings would be released from prison into the custody of his parents on July 28. The plan was to keep Cummings on supervised probation through 2020, his listed date of release.
