A Tulsa police officer was found not guilty Wednesday in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man last September.

Officer Betty Jo Shelby testified during the trial that she shot 40-year-old Terence Crutcher out of fear after he failed to obey her commands and appeared to reach inside his SUV for what she believed was a firearm, according to KJRH-TV.

The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for over nine hours.

Defense Attorney Shannon McMurray told the news station that Shelby is "elated and very proud of her jury" and is ready to get back to her life.

During the trial, prosecutors told jurors that Shelby overreacted, arguing that Crutcher had his hands in their air and wasn't being combative.

The shooting, which was captured on video, went viral and stirred controversy nationally last year.
