A South Carolina Sheriff's deputy and a police officer wounded in a shootout last week have been released from the hospital.
Jasper County Deputy Justin Smith and Hardeeville Police Sgt. Kelvin Grant were both shot while responding to a domestic violence call Thursday night, according to WSAZ-TV.
Smith was shot in the arm while Grant was shot in the hand and collar bone area. Both officers underwent surgery for their injuries.
The incident began shortly after 6 p.m. on April 20 after multiple gunshot were heard from a residence on Sanders Road in the Sanders Subdivision of Hardeeville.
When law enforcement arrived, they found 26-year-old Jose Alberto Trejo trying to shoot his mother.
"They entered the house, and the suspect came out of the bedroom firing at the officers, with no warning, so it was kind of an ambush style type of attack is the way we feel," Jasper County Sheriff Chris Malphrus told reporters.
The officers returned fire, killing Trejo on the scene.
"I want to see all of our officers go home at night. And so we train them very hard to try and do that. And we’re fortunate that their training kicked in and they were able, ya know, they’re hurt, but they can go home," Hardeeville Police Chief Sam Woodward said.
Both officers were wearing ballistic vests, and the deputy was wearing a body camera.
The shootout is currently under investigation and officials said that the video will not be released until the investigation is complete.
