Body camera footage was released Tuesday from a shootout involving two Cincinnati police officers and a suspect.
Officers Kenneth Grubbs and William Keuper responded to a domestic violence report on March 12 around 12:13 a.m. at an apartment building in the 2600 block of Gilbert Avenue, according to WCPO-TV.
The officers entered the courtyard and attempted to stop Damion McRae because he matched the description given by the caller. The man then approached them with a 9mm rifle and opened fire from about six feet away.
Grubbs was struck in the lower abdomen, but was able to return fire as he fell.
"He's an 18-year veteran officer," Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said during a press conference Tuesday. "He's very well trained, and here he proved his training. After being shot he was able to protect himself and his partner and communicate with the suspect."
Keuper was walking behind Grubbs and shot back at the suspect, who was hit and fell to the ground. The officer then knelt down to cover his wounded partner.
Grubbs fired 17 shots and Keuper fired eight rounds, while McRae fired one round before his gun jammed.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced Tuesday that both officers were cleared of any charges in the incident.
"I really think it was an act of God that saved those two cops," Deters told reporters. "If that gun didn’t jam, we might be going to a couple of funerals now."
McRae and Grubbs were transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.
Grubbs suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
McRae was indicted on one count of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, two counts of weapon under disability, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of assault.
