N.C. Police Major Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

Goldsboro Police Major Jay Memmelaar died after suffering a heart attack while working out in the department's gym Thursday night.

A Goldsboro, North Carolina police officer died after suffering a heart attack while working out in the department's gym Thursday night.

Major Jay Memmelaar was taking part in his department's physical fitness program around 7 p.m. when he began to experience discomfort in his chest, according a news release.

He returned to his office where he collapsed a short time later and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Memmelaar served with the Goldsboro Police Department for 25 years and is survived by his wife and two children.

"It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that the Goldsboro Police Department and the City of Goldsboro has lost a great officer and a dear friend. Major Jay Memmelaar passed away unexpectedly yesterday and will be missed dearly by his brothers and sisters in blue, as well as many others," Police Chief of Police Michael West said in a statement on Friday. "For over 25 years, Jay served his community. We ask that you keep the Memmelaar family in your thoughts and prayers."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
