Calif. Officer Dies at Station While On Duty

Redwood City Police Officer Gerardo Silva was discovered at police headquarters unconscious and not breathing Friday morning.

A veteran Redwood City, California police officer died at headquarters while on duty Friday morning.

Officer Gerardo Silva was on patrol when he received a call for service at the police station, according to a news release.

The when the 18-year veteran of the force failed to come back in service, fellow officers initiated a search of the building after not receiving a response over radio.

The 57-year-old was soon discovered in the facility unconscious and not breathing.

Officers immediately started CPR and used a defibrillator until Redwood City Fire Department and EMS personnel took over.

Silva was transported to Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City where he was pronounced dead.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
