A New York State Police trooper died after being struck by a vehicle near the police station Wednesday morning.

Trooper Timothy Pratt was assisting the driver of a tractor-trailer when he was hit by an SUV on Ballard Road around 6:15 a.m., according to The Post-Star.

Pratt was transported to Saratoga Hospital and later transferred to Albany Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials said that the trooper was on the truck's "running board" and stepped off into a lane when he was hit.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Pratt was uninjured and remained at the scene. It was not immediately known if the driver would face charges.

"Trooper Pratt was a dedicated trooper who was proud to put on his uniform every day and serve the citizens of New York state," PBA President Thomas Mungeer said in a statement. "His presence will be missed by his family, friends and fellow troopers. We will never forget his sacrifice."

Pratt became a trooper in 1987, and spent much of his career spent patrolling Saratoga and Warren counties. He previously served in the U.S. Air Force from 1979 to 1986.

Pratt is survived by his fiancee, his two sons and a daughter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
