N.Y. Deputy Dies in Dive Training Exercise

Ulster County Sheriff's Sgt. Kerry Winters died while participating in an In-Water Rescue Team dive training operation Thursday afternoon.

A veteran Ulster County, New York Sheriff's deputy died during a diving exercise Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Kerry Winters was participating in an In-Water Rescue Team dive training operation at the Ashokan Reservoir when the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., according to The Hudson Valley News Network.

Winters was transported to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley's Broadway campus where he was pronounced dead.

Officials did not release any addition details on the death of the 51-year-old.

Dive teams from at least three local sheriff’s agencies and several fire department were on the scene near Brodhead Road at state Route 28A.

"We are all devastated at the loss of Kerry Winters, (a) corrections sergeant from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department," Ulster County Executive Michael Hein said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of unspeakable grief. The entire Ulster County family mourns this profound loss of an individual dedicated to public safety and helping others."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
